Motif Book

This was my major porject at Massey University.

For a couple of months I followed round Wellington based progressive rock band, The Novelist. I went to practices, recording sessions and gigs, taking photographs, keeping notes of what happened, and recording conversations. All of this data gathering gave me an insight into the way the band worked, their dedication, skill and good humour. This all went into the 150 pages of Motif: A Visual Biography of The Novelist.

Their do-it-yourself sensibilities, shown in the way the they were involved in the entire msic creating process, were reflected in my process - from attending sessions and taking photographs, right up to self-binding the book. I also noticed their sense of humour which also comes through in the book. Sometimes as one-liners taken from their dialogue, but more often in more esoteric in-jokes which will not be noticed until someone spends more time with the book.

I won Silver in the BeST Awards 2009 for this project.
